Why are Mac users so loyal?
Why are Mac users so loyal? This question have many answers and I will begin with the first one... Think Different.
Yes, Think Different. Why should we think different? I think we have to step back a little bit and analyze this for a while. For me, when I hear the statement think different I think of people wanting to do things not everyone else does. Not to follow in someone else's footsteps. They want to walk their own path. Some people are happy enough fitting in and getting accepted by the majority of people but some want to break out of this pattern and to be... different.
When you decide to buy a Mac you are making a choice you probably have given some thought already. When the average Joe want to buy a computer I can bet that the first thing on his mind is what the computer costs and where he can get the cheapest one. By thinking this the Apple laptops is no alternative for him, because they cost more and he doesn't understand why. Or he doesn't really care.
This thinking can be applied to cars too. If you buy a car which sole purpose is taking you from A to B you probably wont go out and buy a BMW. That car is expensive, and you can get a cheaper car that will take you from A to B anyway. The same thinking can be applied for the Mac.
So why do people buy the BMW, the Mac or Giorgio Armani clothes? I will tell you why, they want to be different. They do not want what everyone else has, they are quality aware and is not afraid of spending a little more money to get a better product in their opinion.
This boils down to peoples opinion, people ask me why I have a MacBook, when I could have gotten a cheaper PC with better specs. You want to know what I answer them? I say: because I wanted a Mac, thats why I bought it.
For me the biggest reason to get a Mac was Mac OS X. But some people might think I bought the computer just to show off. But that cant be true because I rarely ever have the computer outside the house. I never actively demonstrate the computer to people if I have visitors at home. Of course if they ask me about it I will tell them a little bit but no sales pitch here.
I got the computer because I wanted it, and some actually get surprised when they expect a sales pitch from me but doesn't get anyone. My mother for example, she have noticed that I had switched from PC to Mac, and sticked with it. I haven't really bothered telling her to switch but one day she was visiting me and wanted to see some photos I had taken.
I started up iPhoto, gave the laptop to my mother and I said: here, take a look. She asked me some questions and I answered them to the best of my ability, she continued to watch photos and was quiet for a while until ... She looks up and said, I am getting a Mac!
So, why are Mac users so loyal? I think it is several reasons for this but it could be that in the 90-ies Apple was on the brink of destruction, the company was in bad shape and Steve Jobs came back to save it. And he succeeded.
Apple make good products, they tend to work fine most of the time. You feel a part of something when you have a Mac. Ultimately it is our own choice, you have to try it before you decide what to think. Not just 5 minutes in a store somewhere.
