You are wondering: where can I purchase an iPhone? That is a good question and perhaps it is not so obvious as people tend to think. You are not bound to the Apple Store you know ... you can get the iPhone from other stores too. And you might just get a better deal. It is smart to check around a little bit before you decide where to buy the phone.
In the United States AT&T is one place where you can buy it but you can also get the phone from the Apple Store, Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Others retailers are starting or are already selling the iPhone. This way we get a little bit of competition at least. You might save in on some accessories or something depending on where you buy it. One of the complaints directed to the iPhone is that you have to sign up for a two year contract to get one. Not everyone wants to sign a contract but Apple are making that a bit difficult to circumvent at the moment.
The Used Apple iPhone
One option can be to buy a used Apple iPhone. You might not get a brand new one but at least you do not have to sign the contract. eBay amongst other places is one place you can find one. Be careful though, iPhone is a popular item and make sure you do your research of the seller if you plan to get a used one.
Other Countries
In Norway Apple have to follow the Norwegian law, and the Norwegian law is in favor for the consumer. When Apple released the iPhone in Norway we did have to sign a contract just to get one. However the contract was a one-year contract. If we want we can call the place where we bought the iPhone and tell them that we want to break the contract. The provider then by Norwegian law have to accept this, charge a fee and then unlock the phone. This way we can use the phone with whatever GSM provider we choose to use. This fee they charge to break the contract depends on what type of plan you have signed up for. In the end when you add up the fee the phone will cost as expected if you would buy it without a contract.
