Update: ViDock have come out and said they are going to develop it for Thunderbolt! Check out their Facebook page here: ViDock FaceBook
Most of the time you can get by doing your everyday tasks using an laptop but, what about those times you would like to fire up your favorite game? When dealing with games it often demands a lot of power from your computer and with laptops there is no way (yet) to get really good performing graphic cards. New games tend to require a good deal of graphic processing power and you will have a hard time getting the same performance out of your laptop compared to a regular gaming rig.
With Apples new thunderbolt port introduced in the new 2011 MacBook Pros this may change. I am thinking about external graphics here. We already have that on the market with a product called Vidock. However that product uses the ExpressCard slot which is slower compared to the Thunderbolt port. Apple is also going away from the ExpressCard route it seems.
I think it is only a matter of time until we see an external graphics solution based on Thunderbolt. Imagine when you get home with your laptop, just plug in your graphics card and you will have desktop gaming performance using your laptop. That would be nice if you ask me. No more dedicated gaming rigs, use the laptop for everything.
I think it is just a matter of time until someone develops this, it is already proven it can be done with ExpressCard and Vidock. There is no reason it shouldn't work with Thunderbolt!
Lets wait and see ...
