Steam is the name of Valves online game delivery platform and online shop. Think of it like the iTunes Store, but for games instead. It has existed for Windows users since 2003. At the moment there are more than 1 100 games available. Not all of them are available for Mac users however the catalog grows larger each week. In practice you buy a game through the Steam client, the client downloads game files to your computer and you can start playing after the game has downloaded.

I wont say this particular release is the future of Mac gaming. I would say its a big step in the right direction. Apple have never catered good for gamers in my opinion, and the Mac platform still have a long way to go. The future got a little brighter.
