Slow mac

Did your suggestion 1) of rebooting. In your suggestion 2), there is no item called "Login items" on my Mac. Under Accounts I have Login Options and various other things but no "login items". In suggestion 3) I do not have an option "Other" under System Preferences. I generally follow the other suggestions. But the damn thing is still unbearably slow. I feel ripped off since I've only had this Mac two and a half years and I'm tempted to switch back to Windows.
