phone wouldn't charge at all!

My iphone died and I plugged it in but it wouldn't charge with wall OR usb charging. It would show the apple logo, go to black, then shut off. That was it. I tried plugging it in for a bit, blowing dust out of the charging port thing on the phone, and resetting it. NOTHING worked. I was up until 4:30 in the morning looking on message boards and whatnot in search of answers. I then said to myself, "perhaps I should try another power source." Mind you, I had tried different usb ports AND different outlets, cables, chargers, everything!!! So I plugged in my external speaker dock and docked my phone. The familiar apple logo showed up, the screen went black, but rather than turning off, it returned to normal and said there was a 40% charge. Voila! FIXED!
