Which MacBook Pro Hard Drive should I get? And how do I replace it?

Some may want to upgrade their MacBook Pro Hard Drive and that will sure give you a little performance boost if your current hard drive is 5400 rpm. Buying a new 7200 rpm drive should not give you any problems and they work fine in all MacBooks. If you really want some amazing speed you should go for an SSD drive. They cost a bit more but it may be worth it if you don't need that much storage space.

Check before you buy the drive that it is not above 9.5mm in height. Thicker drives wont fit.

You do not need to take your laptop to a MacBook Repair shop because you can do this operation yourself. You can take it to a shop that can do this for you while you are waiting, if you want. However make sure they do not charge you too much because it is extremely easy for them to do this. If you look like someone that doesn't know so much about computers they just might take advantage of that you know ...

You need to buy a drive with the form factor 2.5" and with a SATA interface. You can drives from newegg rather cheap. Or amazon.com. When you replace the drive with the new one and install Mac OS X you will notice that the computer is snappier and more responsive.

How do I replace the drive myself?

I would recommend to check out the site http://www.ifixit.com/. They have extremely good MacBook Repair guides.

When you have the new drive in your Apple MacBook you will have to install Mac OS X again. Just find the DVDs you got with the computer. Insert the first one. Start up the computer while holding the C button pressed. This will make your Mac start up from the DVD and you can perform the installation on your new drive!
