Mac mini media center - the perfect companion to your TV.

A Mac mini media center solution is a small and stylish way to get your videos and other types of media to your TV. You only get the computer when you buy it. You need to add screen, keyboard and mouse yourself. Might be good to know.

Since this page was written I have purchased an Mac Mini and set up a home theater solution myself. Check the link below if you want to read more about it.

Mac Mini As Media Center, My Mac Mini Home Theater Hub

Mac Mini As Media Center Thumbnail Using the Mac Mini as media center hub is the smartest move I have made. I have tried many different home theater solutions without being completely satisfied. Loosing a bit of money in the process too, trying out different solutions. Not all of them are free you know ...

Because of the size and the design this computer can easily be used as a mac mini home theater solution for your flat screen TV. Think of it as a Apple TV but with endless possibilities... instead of restrictions.

Why endless?

Because you chose what software to install, and the mac minis hardware is good enough for good quality video. Even HD over 720p.

Apple have their own media center software called frontrow, it works okay but for the most part only supports files and media iTunes support. And we do not want that do we? That is why I recommend the media center application called Plex. You can download it here: http://www.plexapp.com/. By the way, did I mention Plex was free?

I have recorded a movie that will give you a little insight in how Plex works, trust me you do not want to miss out on this one. The sound may be a little bit off and I apologize for that. Watch my video on YouTube.

This can play virtually anything you throw at it. Plexapp is based on XBMC (Xbox Media Center). This software is also developed specifically for Mac OS X Leopard and higher. It looks really nice on the TV too! You can even use the Apple Remote with Plex, look here: http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Apple_Remote

Apple recently updated the Mac mini (2009) so the timing is pretty good right now if you want to purchase a media center solution based on the Mac.
