If your iPod is having a problem, sometimes the best course of action is to restore the iPod. You should know that this will restore the iPod to the state it was in when it was brand new. And thus all of your songs, settings and other content will be wiped completely. Make sure you have a backup somewhere because you are going to delete everything now!
How to format iPod is the same thing as this restore, it will also format it. Giving you back all available space.
First make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. If not download and install it now.
Make sure you have a working Internet connection, I assume you have one, because you are reading this. iTunes might want to download the latest iPod software, it downloads that from the Internet. Start iTunes now and connect your iPod to the computer.
When the iPod is detected in the source panel of iTunes go to the Summary tab and click restore. I would want to choose updating to the latest version. When this is done, depending on the age of your iPod you may have to disconnect the iPod and connect it to the iPod Power Adapter, this is typically with older iPod models. With newer iPod models you leave it connected to the computer.
Make sure to follow the instructions, you should see a progress bar on your iPod now, it could be difficult to see but when that progress bar is visible it is important that you do NOT disconnect the iPod from the computer, or the power adapter. When this process is done and you connect the iPod to the computer again it will ask you to name the iPod. Just like the first time you got it. This is how to restore an iPod. Wasn't that hard was it?
