Free Mac game downloads, yes there are a lot of free games for Mac available for Mac OS X. It is just a question of finding them. Lucky for you this page lists some of the games I consider the best free games for Mac OS X. You might disagree with me and that is fine. If you want you can contact me if you know about something good that is not listed here.

Please note ! Some of the games here might not be entirely "free". For example OpenTTD wich requires the datafiles from the original game. However these datafiles can be found if you search for "Transport Tycoon Delux data files" on google, it should be the first search result you get.

OpenTTD

Remember Transport Tycoon Deluxe? OpenTTD is a clone of that game originally written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features. OpenTTD is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2.0.

Some of the new features:
- Bigger maps (up to 64 times in size)
- An AI that is actually worthy of its name
- Stable multiplayer mode for up to 8 players on LAN or Internet
- Autorail build tool, improved terraforming
- Crossing tunnels
- Clone, auto-replace and auto-update vehicles
- Possibility to build on slopes and coasts

FlightGear

Miss a flight simulator on your Mac? FlightGear is an open-source, multi-platform, cooperative flight simulator development project. The goal of the FlightGear project is to create a sophisticated flight simulator framework for use in research or academic environments, for the development and pursuit of other interesting flight simulation ideas, and as an end-user application.

Some of the features:
- Over 20,000 real world airports included in the full scenery set.
- Correct runway markings and placement, correct runway and approach lighting.
- Taxiways available for many larger airports (even including the green center line lights when appropriate.)
Sloping runways (runways change elevation like they usually do in real life.)

Freeciv

Freeciv is a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization. The game commences in prehistory and your mission is to lead your tribe from the stone age to the space age. This game is inspired by Civilization II.

FreeCol

FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game based on the old game Colonization, and similar to Civilization. The objective of the game is to create an independent nation. You start with only a few colonists defying the stormy seas in their search for new land. Will you guide them on the Colonization of a New World?

Frets on Fire

Ever played Guitar Hero? Then you might like Frets on Fire, a clone of the Guitar Hero video game. The aim of the game is to play guitar with the keyboard as accurately as possible. It includes a song editor for making your own tunes. Hundreds of songs composed by the community.

Nexuiz

Nexuiz is a 3D game with a goal to create a high quality first person shooter that can be played freely across all platforms in one package. The gameplay is death-match with the most excessive possible speeds and weapons, giving incredibly intense fast paced action. Along with death-match, there are multiple game-modes such as team death-match, capture the flag, domination, and many mutators and weapon options like rocket arena and instagib.

PokerTH

PokerTH is an Texas hold 'em simulator. The game is true to the Texas Hold 'Em rules and betting system. PokerTH supports seven human players. A human can also play against computer players. Players can also play against other PokerTH users online.

Sauerbraten

Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer / singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS. Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.

Scorched 3D

Scorched 3D is a game based quite heavily on the classic DOS game Scorched Earth "The Mother Of All Games". Scorched 3D adds amongst other new features a 3D island environment and LAN and internet play. Scorched 3D is totally free and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris etc.) operating systems.

To make it simple: Scorched 3D is just an artillery game with two tanks taking turns to destroy opponents in an arena. Choose the angle, direction and power of each shot, launch your weapon, and try to blow up other tanks. That's basically it. Although the game can be more complex if you want.

Secret Maryo Chronicles

Secret Maryo Chronicles is an Open Source two-dimensional platform game with a style designed similar to classic sidescroller games. If you have played Super Mario Brothers you will recognize yourself in this game. It is easy to see where the developers got their inspiration from.

StepMania

StepMania is a rhythm game for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It features 3D graphics, keyboard and "dance pad" support, and an editor for creating your own steps. It is similar to Konami's popular arcade game series Dance Dance Revolution.

Teeworlds

This is a sidescrolling multiplayer-only shoot em up game. With a cartoonish and stylish graphics style. While the game is still under development it is playable and can be downloaded for free. Teeworlds weapons get a lot of inspiration from games like Quake and Unreal.

Tremulous

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

Vega Strike

Vega Strike is an Open Source 3d Space Simulator. As you play, you will see that several species and numerous political entities are present in the game, and they do not all co-exist peacefully.
