This Apple iPod Review focus on the iPod Touch 32GB (1G)
Welcome to the Apple iPod review, where I will be talking about the iPod Touch 32GB
When I bought the iPod Touch 32GB it was an impulse item. I had some business in town and some money burning in my pocket just waiting to be used. I went by the Apple store and checked out the iPod touch. It looked quite cool, it is not just an MP3 player but almost like a PDA. Like the iPhone, without the phone part, and a bit slimmer too.
I went home that day with my new iPod touch and played with it all day. With 32GB I could fit almost everything on it. I downloaded all of the best music I had, right onto the iPod and still had many gigabytes left.
All of my images went straight to the unit as well. Funny though. iTunes re encode the pictures, and resize them so they fit nicely on the iPod. This means the pictures takes up less space (I usually take pictures in RAW format), so the gigabytes still kept flourishing with their availability ...
Then I could not resist "hacking" the iPod. With this I got access to a lot of applications otherwise not accessible. When I am talking about "hacking" your iPod I actually mean downloading the Ziphone application and pressing the "hack" button. It is really easy and the application can be downloaded for free here. It works for both Mac OS X and Windows !
When I hacked it I got another icon called Installer. Installer lists many of the applications available for the iPod and iPhone. Check the picture below that show the start screen of Installer.app. Please note: when this Apple iPod Review was written this was the best choice for getting third party applications. Today Cydia is gaining more popularity.
Some of the applications listed here might be just for the iPhone, like SpoofApp: Fake CallerID and VideoRecorder. But still the list is quite good.
I have to apologize for the picture quality, it is not the best, I can promise you in real life it looks a lot better.
This screen is not the only one, this screen only show the featured applications but if you look at the bottom of the image you see something called Install. If you enter into that one the iPod will download the repository of applications available and you will be able to install them right from there. This need access to your wifi network though.
The repository of applications is quite big and it might take a minute or two to download the list, but it is not that big of a deal. When you have the list you can just browse through the different categories and select the things that interest you.
Really cool, right ?
People have also ported emulators to the iPod, like the Super Nintendo, Gameboy and even the Playstation 1 just to name a few. Although I have heard rumors that the playstation games isn't really playable. But still, a cool feature anyway.
I for one downloaded the ScummVM emulator, it enables you to play these good old point and click games from lucas arts. Like the Dig, Day of the tentacle, Full throttle and others. I took some pictures for you if you want to see, and again I apologize for the quality.
Enough of these games, Will this Apple iPod Review recommend the iPod Touch?
If you only, and only listen to music I would have to say no. It is not worth buying. You might be better of with the iPod Classic in that case, or iPod Nano. The iPod touch have many other features than just listening to music. You can watch video, surf the Internet, check your mail and install third party applications if you are willing to hack it. It is your choice. I think the touch is a really cool multimedia machine. It can also be good to know: if you decide to hack it you can always revert to the original software by restoring it with iTunes. You do not destroy anything. Syncing with iTunes and having the iPod hacked at the same time is not a problem, it works just fine.
