The Apple iPhone was the first mobile smartphone Apple created. It has become an extremely popular phone all over the world. With iPhone OS3 it became even better.
The phone was first announced in January 2007 but released to the public in June 2007. Apple had to announce the phone before it was released to get the FCC approval. Because filing for FCC approval is available to the public Apple decided to announce the device before its release.

The first model was the one people like to call the 2G model, also known as the one without 3G. It came in sizes of 4GB, 8GB or 16GB. The 4GB model was discontinued pretty fast, After two months. The phone has a screen size of 3.5 inches and a resolution of 480x320. The battery is a rechargeable built-in battery. 128MB RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Quad band GSM. With GPRS and EDGE, and now also 3G are some of the technical features.
The touchscreen on the iPhone is specifically created to be used with a finger or multiple fingers for the multi-touch features. Like zooming in pictures and websites using Safari. Because of this the touchscreen react to the capacity of the bare skin of your finger. If you want to use the Apple iPhone with a stylus you have to make sure it is a capacitive stylus you use. Also the screen is equipped with several sensors. It will for example turn off the screen when you answer a call so you do not accidentally touch buttons. We also find a sensor that knows witch way the unit is hold and it flips the screen accordingly.
With iTunes App Store the iPhone also have a lot of third party applications you can install. Some of them are free and some of them you have to pay for. Launching the App store was a smart move because it greatly extended the usability of the phone.
Apple iPhone 3G
In July 2008 Apple released the iPhone 3G in more countries. Some of the differences was of course the 3G feature which gives the phone a more broadband like internet experience. The design was also changed, Apple removed the metal backplate to increase the GSM reception and replaced it with a plastic backplate instead.

8. june 2009 Apple unveiled the updated iPhone 3GS. The "s" stands for speed. The new version looks exactly like the iPhone 3G but it is a lot faster compared to the older 3G version. Some tasks will be up to 4 times faster compared to the older 3G phone. I think a realistic view on the speed improvement will be around 1.5 - 2 times faster, in general.
The data speed has been upgraded to 7.2Mbps HSDPA and the camera is now a 3 megapixel camera that enables you to autofocus. Point on the object you want to focus on, tap a button and it focuses. The camera also supports video recording in 30-fps VGA with editing features. The image quality is actually really nice, much better compared to the older model so they have definitely done something with the camera.
The battery capacity have been upgraded to 5 hours 3G talk time, and 9 hours wifi usage. Another feature is when you hold down the menu button, you get a new voice control interface. This interface lets you control the phone just using your voice. I would love this feature while driving, not having to pick up the phone while driving, that is illegal i Norway by the way.
Apple have been quiet about the specifications of this phone, but I can reveal them for you right now. The old iPhone 3G had a CPU speed of 412MHz and 128MB of RAM. The iPhone 3GS have a 600MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM. So we see a little speed increase there. Another new thing is that we see a new type of protection on the screen. It is more resistant to oil and fingerprints from your finger. This makes it a lot more eaieser to clean. Just use a soft lint free cloth to wipe the screen and it will be fine again.
Apple iPhone 3GS pricing
The 16GB version 3GS will cost $199 and the 32GB $299. The current available iPhone 3G (note the missing "s") did get a price drop to only $99. I guess Apple want to saturate the market. Pretty smart I guess. If you already have a contract you will have to pay more.
