The Apple 85W Magsafe Power Adapter is what gives your MacBook Pro its power and is at the same time the MacBook AC adapter that charges your battery.
What is Magsafe?
Magsafe is the power-plug on the Apple laptops: MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Magsafe is designed so that if someone trips over the power cord it will just detach from the computer without dragging the computer along with it. Or brake the plug itself. This have saved my computer countless times. Especially when I have a two year old kid running around at home!
The plug itself have a small light that indicate if your laptop is charging or fully charged. Orange when charging, green when fully charged.

Consider Deal Extreme
An original MacBook charger is expensive. A friend of mine recently had to buy another one because of wire wear. We searched for a while and found a MacBook charger at DealExtreme for around $30 - $40, if I am not mistaken. It was not an original charger, but it worked just fine.
