Aluminum MacBook Review
By now you have probably already read quite a good amount of macbook reviews about this notebook. This Aluminum MacBook review will be honest and with my own personal opinions. You will get to know what I think about this computer and if it is worth spending money on.
Because I live in Norway I had to wait a little bit longer compared to people living in the USA. The wait was horribly long but after a few weeks I could walk down to my local post office and pick up the package sent from Apple. As I get the box I notice how smaller it was compared to the older MacBook box I had. Nothing fancy but still impressive that they can shrink the box and still protect the laptop so good during shipping.
During the time I waited for the MacBook I regularly checked several websites to look for people that already got their laptops and read others aluminum MacBook Review. Someone reported problems with the keys on their keyboards not being completely straight among other things so I was a bit scared and hoped I got a machine without any problems.
The first thing I checked when I unpacked the laptop was the keyboard, and to my joy it looked fine and the keys were fine. So far so good.
With the aluminum casing the computer feels absolutely solid. It feels rigid and solid built. I have nothing to complain about regarding build quality. It is really sturdy.
In conjunction with the MacBook order I also wanted to upgrade the hard drive to a 320GB 7200 rpm drive instead. The first thing I did with the laptop was actually to change the hard drive. It was easy to do. I booted up with the Mac OS X install DVD without any problems and went on with the installation. It ships with a 5400 rpm drive as default but it is a little bit slow for my taste.
The most noticeable compared to the other MacBook I had was the trackpad. It kind of feels like the external mouse is only needed for gaming, or precision editing of photos or something similar. For everyday use the trackpad will be enough for me. One reason for this has to be the gestures I can do with it. If I want to show all open windows I just use four fingers and drag them downwards on the trackpad. When you hear about it, or even see it it looks quite awkward but trust me, it will become second nature after a while. In the end the day will come when you wonder why this feature wasn't introduced earlier. This is of course not the only feature but it is the one I use the most.
With the new aluminum MacBook Apple also introduced a new graphics card from Nvidia. With this card I can play World of Warcraft without any problems at all. Not with max settings of course but still with good enough settings. For the casual gamer this computer can supply some of the power needed.
Check this youtube video if you want to know how it performs in games like Oblivion.
One thing that disappoints me a bit is the screen. For everyday use it is good enough, but watching movies or playing games can be a bit annoying. You kind of have to sit in the correct angle or else you will have problem seeing dark parts in a movie / game. The screen of the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro is much better. It comes with a glossy screen. Someone are bothered by the glossy screen but I think it is nice.
Another drawback is the lack of firewire, although I am not one of the extensive users of this port but it is still annoying. If you want firewire you have buy the MacBook Pro instead. Or use some kind of USB to FireWire converter.
All things summed up I am really happy with this machine, still with the few drawbacks I use it everyday and it still havent let me down yet. I recommend this machine to everyone that use their computer for everyday tasks, and maybe some casual gaming. If you are doing heavy work you might want to look at the MacBook Pro instead. I absolutely do NOT regret this purchase! I hope this aluminum MacBook review will help you in your decision process.
